Pursuit of Excellence
You’re a traveler of a more adventurous sort, looking for a more authentic experience. You appreciate that witnessing a fjord from the vantage of a self-powered vessel is unrivaled. You want to be eye-level with marine mammals, hear the eagles crying, breath-in the fresh air… not just watch, but feel the coastline, just as the first human inhabitants did. Our team here at Sunny Cove Sea Kayaking understands! It's exactly what we seek every time we dip a paddle into the waters of Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park.
The environment of Resurrection Bay, Fox Island and Kenai Fjords National Park - while breathtaking - is dynamic and ever changing. This environment can occasionally present challenges to even the most experienced among us and any gap in training and professionalism can dramatically affect the quality of the experience, and more importantly, the level of safety. This is exactly why we employ solid equipment, sound planning, and above all, exceptional trip leaders with heaps of local knowledge.
Rest assured you've come to the right place. Each year Sunny Cove Sea Kayaking takes over 3,500 guests of all experience levels out paddling these waters. Seward, Resurrection Bay, Fox Island and Kenai Fjords National Park is our home and sea kayaking is our passion and our sole enterprise. We have been in the pursuit of excellence through our guides and staff for more than 20 years - in operation, under the same ownership, since 1996 - the longest of any company in Seward!
We’ve done this by hiring amazing people, keeping our footprint small, and remaining a quality over quantity operation. We offer a particular selection of tours - fully-furnished experiences - that are consistent and time-tested. Additionally, our guides specialize all season in kayak-based guiding, each having accrued extensive, location-specific training and experience.
We take pride in our experienced staff of outdoor professionals. We seek out people who are enthusiastic outdoor educators, who love to share their love of kayaking and experiencing the natural world. Guiding isn’t just a summer job for our guides; it’s a lifestyle. Our guides are veteran trip leaders and perennial sea kayakers, each bringing personal and professional paddling experience from the four corners of the continent and beyond. They strive to make each guest feel comfortable, safe, informed, entertained, and appreciated.
Each season begins with our entire staff participating in a 3+ week training program. Prior to arrival each guide is required to obtain a Wilderness First Responder Certification. In addition, our extensive training program covers (but is not limited to):
- Level 3 American Canoe Association kayaking techniques and rescue standards
- Alaskan natural history and ecology sessions
- Interpretation, instruction and education skills
- Leave No Trace Ethics
- Ongoing training sessions throughout the season
- Sunny Cove ethical practices
- Safety and risk mitigation practices
- Route finding skills and techniques
Our knowledgeable reservation staff are also experienced outdoor enthusiasts who know a ton about Alaska and chatting with them will enrich your stay in our beautiful area. Our goal is to make it easy for you to explore and appreciate this dynamic place.
Furthermore, our staff operate beneath an umbrella of consistent organization, planning, and oversight throughout the season. In short, we make sure our entire company meets the highest standards in safety, education, and interpretation to provide you with an engaging and safe experience you’ll never forget.
