One of Seward’s best known traditions is the annual July 4thMount Marathon Race. Named for the mountain it is run on and not the actual distance, this race is believed to be the second oldest footrace in America behind only the Boston Marathon.

Started as a friendly bet to see if a runner could make it up and down the mountain in less than an hour, the challenge evolved into an annual tradition that brings over 20,000 visitors to Seward on the 4th of July. The race itself is roughly a 5K (3.1 miles) and runners will gain about 3,000 feet of elevation before turning around and running/falling/rolling/tumbling/etc. back down to the finish line. The record time was set last year at 42:55. If you don’t have plans yet for this Friday, or Seward would love to invite you to join the holiday festivities!
