Meet Our Staff: Forest

Forest at Havasupai
Each year Sunny Cove is lucky enough to employ some of the most interesting guides on the planet (no exaggeration!).  Forest, in his third year as a Lead Guide with Sunny Cove, hails from Iowa.  He holds a BA in Outdoor Recreation, an MA in TESOL/Applied Linguistics, is a Wilderness First Responder, is a Level 3 American Canoe Association Instructor and is a certified Alaska Tour Guide.  And that's the short list...

Why do you love to guide? "Guiding allows me to give people safe, appropriate access to Alaska's wilderness. I hope that people can catch a breath of fresh air and crave wilderness for their home town."

What is your all-time favorite food? "Home-made rye bread and butter."

What is your favorite book? "My favorite book is the 'Tao of Pooh,' which is serious, satirical, and all around warming of the soul.

What has been your best Alaska experience? "Paddling among tons of Harbor Seals in Northwestern Fjord."

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? "Cross the globe in a sailing vessel."

"I like soft trails, stringed instruments, and folk tales and remedies.  In my mind, everywhere once had the clean and natural appeal of Alaska, and with some effort we can see these places once again much closer to home."

Forest's most recent Trip Advisor review: "I can't recommend this team enough. They were great. Forest and Andrea were our guides for the three day trip to Aialik Bay, and despite the weather conspiring against us, they provided a fabulous experience. Optimism, support, great information, and mostly just a gift for connecting both with us and connecting us to the other kayakers just made it a great trip. Whales, sea otter (almost in the kayaks with us) harbor seals, dolphins, all kinds of puffins, bears (not too close) and giant glacier calvings with us close by. Food was excellent, hiking was great, great gear (tents, sleeping bags, truly waterproof jackets and pants) and just a great time

We loved it, loved the people (fellow adventurers and the guides) and would choose them again in a heartbeat.

Matt and Leslie Handley"

Stay tuned for more staff interviews!
