Staff Spotlight: Andrew Smith

Nicknamed one of Sunny Cove’s two majestic bald eagles, we are excited to introduce you to today’s staff spotlight Andrew! Originally from Flower Mound, Texas, Andrew was shocked to discover that not everything was bigger in Texas and made his way up north to check out what the largest state in the Union had to offer. Andrew is in his first year guiding with Sunny Cove, but came with a background of guiding in the San Juan Islands and having paddled much of the Ireland and California coastline. “Guiding affords me an opportunity to show and teach people about some of the most beautiful natural areas that I have ever experienced.”

Andrew's Mantra: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Andrew's Mantra: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Andrew is well traveled having spent time living in Cambodia working for the Peace Corps. His favorite travels include eating rice and riding trains in Myanmar, backpacking through the Appalachian Mountains, snowboarding in Utah, and scuba diving in Nicaragua. His ultimate dream is to buy a sailboat and spend a winter sailing the Caribbean.

Quick on his feet despite a nice (thin) layer of blubber, Andrew’s Alaskan spirit animal is clearly the Dall’s Porpoise. He displays his Texan heritage proudly by calling everybody ma’am or sir and you can easily spot him on the water wearing his rustic cowboy hat. If that sounds like a good time to you, then come join Andrew on the water…but don’t wander off to far or he’ll have to lasso you back in.
