Meet Our Staff: Matt

Matt, seriously in front of a giant 'berg.
Matt, originally from Georgia, has been with Sunny Cove for three summers, and is one of our top-notch lead guides.  He spends as many days as possible in a kayak and has guided in AK, FL and the Virgin Islands.  Let's just say the guy likes to kayak.  He has a BA in Philosophy, is a Level 2 American Canoe Association Instructor, is also a Wilderness First Responder and is a Certified Alaska Tour Guide.

Why do you love to guide? "I have the pleasure of acting as a conduit:  bringing adventure to the adventurous, information to the inquisitive, tranquility to the travel-weary, and a maritime macrocosm to the masters of terra firma.  Actually, I just bring people to waterways and the water does most of the work for me."

What is your all-time favorite food? "Moose's Tooth Pizza."

What is your favorite book? "The Road by Cormac McCarthy."

What has been your favorite life experience? Pulling anchor, leaving my hometown, and making a transcontinental road trip to Alaska (i.e. turning my back on the so-called real world)."

What has been your best Alaska experience? "Paddling briefly with (and between) two meandering fin whales."

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? "To swim (snorkel or scuba) in the presence of a whale."

Matt's most recent Trip Advisor review: "My husband and I did an all day guided kayak/ hike with Sunny Cove and it was our favorite part of our trip. We stopped by the beach when we first arrived and the girls working were really friendly, gave us info, and referred us to the location in Seward for booking. I was a llittle nervous about the paddle and having "hard core ourdoors people" leading the trip but everyone we met was unpretentious and friendly. Tess, the girl who made our booking, was very helpful in helping us choose our tour and with what to wear. Our guide Matt was professional and knowledgeable. He is obviously very passionate about the wildlife and the surrounding area. I was able to take some great pictures and never felt rushed. It was just my husband and I and Matt and he answered our questions and told us about the area, but also just let us paddle and enjoy the beauty. When we had a little bit of extra time, he suggested we hike to a waterfall from another beach. We felt safe in the kayaks and the gear seemed new/ updated. Even when the waves got a bit choppy towards the end, I felt reassured to have a guide right there encouraging us. They provided a satisfying lunch and snacks. I would definitely use this company again. Thanks!"

"Why spend life climbing ladders when you can hop in a yak and drift laterally?"
